AUTHENTICITY POLICY EFFECTIVE SEPTEMBER 1, 2018
DECASO launched in 2017 with the goal of becoming the most trusted online source for original and authentic decorative art and objects. As DECASO continues to grow, the topic of quality standards and authenticity of pieces in the DECASO marketplace has been discussed both internally and externally.
There is growing confusion around the lack of clarity for buyers regarding authentic or attributed pieces, licensed re-editions, reproductions, and those that are said to be “in the style of” or “in the manner of”.
Buyers are tasked with discerning why there is sometimes a vast price difference between items that appear online to be visually identical or similar.
We envision that the policies outlined here will ensure that DECASO buyers have a reliably positive purchasing experience that builds trust in the marketplace and leads to repeat patronage for the dealer community.
GENERAL QUALITY STANDARDS
DECASO is an open and transparent destination for the world’s best dealers. DECASO relies on its dealer community to largely self-monitor their pieces. We encourage dealers to present pieces that are:
- Of high quality, upholding the standards of DECASO and its community
- Genuinely from the period stated
- Original with an accurate description
- Of undisputed provenance and uncontested entitlements
AUTHENTIC & ORIGINAL
The words “authentic” and “original” are some of the most confidence-building words in the decorative arts world. As such, we require that they be used in a truthful and consistent manner. DECASO welcomes items described as “original” and “authentic” subject to the dealer being ready and able to provide proof of the assertion upon request. Title and description may include the designer/artist’s name and should include the word “original” or “authentic”. Original bespoke/contemporary/artisan work is also encouraged and should follow the same guidelines--original work of all eras is always celebrated!
Examples of reliable documentation:
- Proof of provenance
- Exhibition history
- Pertinent literature
- Artist/maker signature
- Auction catalogues
- Letter from descendants asserting originality
- Relevant scientific test results, if applicable
DECASO asks that authentic and original works include a detailed and complete condition report for any piece that has damage, faults, repairs, or restorations, unless the disclosure(s) is (are) entirely contained on the label for that object. Reference to corresponding condition reports can be made in the product description with the statement: “Please request full condition report”. Alternatively, the condition report can be uploaded as an image.
DECASO will allow pieces titled "attributed to" on the site subject to the dealer being able to verify upon request said attribution with facts and evidence such as:
- Proof of provenance
- Vintage brochures, design magazines, furniture books and/or museum exhibition catalogs published during that period.
- Expert or professional opinion-either written or published, relevant scientific tests. Title and description may include the designer/artist’s name and must include the word “attributed to” only if the above evidence is readily available upon request. For privacy reasons, evidence does not need to be posted on DECASO, but rather available if requested.
RE-EDITIONS OR REPRODUCTIONS
DECASO will not allow re-editions/direct reproductions of iconic designs--with very limited exceptions. Direct reproduction is defined by likeness, color, material, dimensions/size and scale.
Our sister company, Chairish, does allow re-editions and reproductions and will work with a dealer to list on their site. There is no fee to list.
IN THE STYLE OF/IN THE MANNER OF
While we encourage unique and interesting pieces of quality, we request that you do not use the phrases “in the style of” or “in the manner of” in regards to a maker/designer in any product listings. The item should stand on its own merits and, per the above, must not be a replica/reproduction. "In the style of" an era or style is allowed, e.g. "In the style of Art Deco".
THE VETTING COMMITTEE
DECASO has selected a small group of trusted advisors to participate on our vetting committee to help resolve any issues regarding authenticity.
Should a product be called into question, the community is welcome to politely, fairly, and unbiasedly ask for validation of the piece as stated. We ask that paperwork or provenance be provided discreetly to the Vetting Committee within one week of the request. DECASO will not share any information provided by the dealer beyond this small group.
A determination will then be made if a proposed work is as stated. Accordingly, a dealer may be asked to remove the piece from the site or relabel the piece for accuracy. Participating DECASO dealers agree to fully cooperate with the Vetting Committee and supply all available relevant information. Please note that this sharing of information will remain strictly confidential at all times.
Also, inauthentic pieces and direct reproductions will be removed from the site. Multiple (3 or more) violations of the above policies will result in the dealer being asked to leave the DECASO community.
The DECASO community of dealers and buyers values authenticity and fair representation. The success of this process depends on mutually practiced regard and respect by all active participants. We envision consistent professional conduct and collegial cooperation to be the hallmarks of DECASO members.
While many of DECASO’s product offerings skew towards vintage we also encourage and support the growing market for original works from contemporary artisans.
Thank you for being part of DECASO and helping to make it the most trusted source for authentic design!
